About Align With Your Purpose

Rebuilding your life after recovery from addiction can appear to be an overwhelming task.

The initial feelings of gratitude and pride at having put down the drink or the drugs can easily be overshadowed by the enormity of the task ahead. While many aspects of life slowly improve, there can also be frustration that they are not changing fast enough, or a sense of desperation about knowing where to start.

Overcoming addiction to alcohol or drugs is not easy, but it is so worth it.

This was what Anne felt. She loved waking up in the morning, knowing where she had been the night before and feeling very grateful for her sobriety. She was starting to put her life back together. In a few months she would be able to apply for her driving licence and then things would be getting back to normal.

But, what was normal? There was no “normal” to go back to – everything about her life had changed since she stopped drinking, for alcohol was her drug of choice. She had been sober now for quite a few 24 hours, had a place to call her own and had started a new job to support herself. So why did she feel this underlying sense of unease, a longing for more?

Truth was, she didn’t really have any idea what she was going to do with the rest of her life! When she had finally been given that gift of desperation and called the helpline which started her on her road to recovery, she had not thought beyond the next day.

As her sober days mounted up and her self-confidence began to grow she felt enormous gratitude for the gift of sobriety she had received and she was beyond grateful for the times she felt peace and serenity, but now she wanted to move ahead with her life and she was at a loss to know where to start. She didn’t really feel she had a clear sense of her own identity. She wondered, “So, what’s next? What am I going to do with the rest of my life? Who am I really? And what is my life purpose?”

She was talking about this lack of direction to a friend, who suggested she check out a new coaching program she had come across online.

The Next Step Coaching Programme turned out to be just what she needed!

Looking at where she was and how far she had come already allowed her to acknowledge and appreciate herself and her Higher Power for the progress she had made. It also gave her a starting point for looking ahead.

By working through a structured set of steps, The Five Steps to Aligning With Your (Sober) Purpose, Anne was able to gain massive clarity around what was really important to her, what she was passionate about and what issues she needed to address in her life in order to keep moving in the direction of her dreams, which she had great fun building!

The step by step focus meant her feeling of overwhelm disappeared, because she was always doing something to move herself forward. She discovered how to “keep it in the day” and focus on the now moment. Feelings of hope grew stronger every day and she sometimes caught herself feeling real excitement at the possibilities which lay ahead for her. She hadn’t felt that for a long time, not since before she had started drinking, when she was a young teenager, dreaming of her future life.

In recovery she had found a connection with something bigger than herself – her higher power. Through the first step, “Go Within & Connect with your Higher Self” she was able to develop that connection to the point where she trusted the messages completely. She found she was able to ask for guidance on any aspect of her life, by going within and being quiet, then asking.

The second step focused on helping her to believe in herself. Like many recovering alcoholics and addicts, she had very low self-esteem and was very good at beating herself up. Through the work in Step Two “Believe Change is Possible – for you!” she learned how to appreciate herself and acknowledge how far she had come. She changed her attitude towards change, from total fear and panic to a calm acceptance of it and an understanding that the only thing she could change was herself. She found this very empowering and a real eye-opener that she didn’t have to expend so much energy trying to change other people – she could choose to just focus on her own response to whatever happened.

The second part of Step Two (Allow Yourself to Dream) encouraged her to create a vision for her future life by becoming clear about her core values and deciding on what was important to her. Here she went back to her pre-drinking days, when everything had seemed possible. It was as though time had stopped for her during the drinking years, and now she was not drinking, she could revisit all her old dreams and aspirations.

In Step Three, “Find your Passions and Purpose” [“What is your Why? Get Clear Why you’re here] she had great fun bringing back old memories of things she used to really enjoy doing when she was younger, things she had forgotten about. It made her realise that she had many skills and talents she could draw upon. It was also exciting for her to remember past successes – she felt like she had lost sight of things that she enjoyed doing, but now it was time.

Of course once she started making changes to how she responded to situations and how she showed up in relationships, she came across things that stopped her. By working through Step Four, “Identify and Release Limiting Beliefs & Blocks”, she was able to address these issues and let them go, freeing up her energy to focus on moving forward. Eventually she began to shift her perception of what she had always seen as “problems”, by looking at them as opportunities to deal with long-standing, often subconscious issues. She was reminded of a saying one of her teachers used to trot out in school, “The lesson will be repeated until it is learned.” It had seemed trite to her when she was a teenager, but now she saw how accurate it was. That was certainly what began to happen for Anne as she did the work in each of the five steps.

Once she got to the fifth step, “Into Action! Start Walking Your Path to Purpose”, she knew she was already on her way. Step Five encouraged her to put into practice everything she had learned and to integrate the new habits into her daily life to support her as she walked her Path to Purpose, which she also thought of as her Road to Recovery.
