Who, me? Oh no! Not me! I’m not addicted – I don’t do drugs, I’m not an alcoholic…

Depending on your definition of addiction, you could argue that many of us in the modern world are addicted to something, whether that is technology, shopping, food, alcohol, drugs…the list goes on.

The truth is it’s a fine line between a desire for something and a growing dependence on it, which can lead to increased tolerance and eventually addiction. Take chocolate. Now and then a little does no harm. It makes you feel good.

Who doesn’t want to feel good?

But if your love of chocolate grows to a point where you HAVE to have it to feel better, that’s moving into dependence. As you go on, you’ll need more chocolate, more often, to get that good feeling. It starts to have negative consequences: your skin erupts with pimples; your weight increases, as your increased chocolate consumption leads to increased consumption of other sugary foods…you get the picture.

It’s the same for any other substance. The ones you are probably most aware of are drugs and alcohol. The killers.

If you are in recovery from addiction to drugs or alcohol, or have a loved one who is, then you know first-hand how horrific it can be.

Yet there is hope. All round the world, people begin their journey of recovery every day.

A journey to a better life, free from addiction. It begins by taking The Next Step.
